Before the election, the former guerrilla fighter pledged to terminate all new upstream exploration and future bidding rounds—echoing Mexico’s leftist president Andres Lopez Obrador, who quickly halted fresh licensing rounds upon taking office—instead refocusing government efforts on accelerating the energy transition. Petro has long been a critic of Colombia’s dependence on the fossil fuel sector, and notably appointed environmental activist Francia Marquez as his vice-president.

Guyana is viewed as one of the world’s newest oil hotspots because of prolific discoveries offshore but even so, Consultant Geologist, Fazal Hosein, believes that the country should also search for oil and gas resources inland. Hosein, who was one of the technical presenters at Suriname’s oil and gas summit on Thursday, explained that Guyana and Suriname share a geological space that contains bountiful oil and gas resources. And Hosein acknowledged that there have already been significant oil finds offshore Guyana and Suriname in recent years. These oil and gas resources have been found in the Guyana-Suriname basin, an area located beyond the northern coast of the two countries.

In Brazil, hydrous ethanol’s competitiveness against gasoline was already falling in May but with the cuts in various taxes that came into force this week and last, hydrous ethanol has become even less competitive. Ethanol prices are expected to fall in response to gasoline’s enhanced competitiveness. In the Southeast region, for example, the ethanol price ratio against gasoline fell to 64.48% last week when ethanol is typically viewed as a better deal when it is above 70%.
